Overview / Layout
SAWDUST is in like-new condition having been professionally maintained and continually upgraded. She has completed The Great Loop and has cruised from Maine to the Bahamas. Her interior layout as well as deck and cockpit layout are well designed and allow for comfortable, elegant and easy cruising.
Entering the salon from the cockpit, you get the sense of an open and roomy interior, with great light, ventilation, and visibility. Even as you continue forward to the accommodations, you will not feel cramped or closed in “down below.” Along with her brilliant design, the appointments, fixtures, joinery, and finishings throughout the boat make SAWDUST a home you will feel special to be in.
Her galley-up layout features a 3-burner LPG stove top, microwave-convection oven, 1 undercounter Frigoboat DC with front door and a top load independent Frigoboat freezer, hand laid ceramic tile counter tops. A comfortable L-shaped settee and dinette table converts to a double berth when desired.
The entire boat is air conditioned, including the head. Forward and down two steps is a separate office/study area with built-in desk, to port. A comfortable guest stateroom with a single berth is to starboard. The roomy head is just forward to port, and an equally roomy separate stall shower is to starboard. It is a tremendous advantage to have the head and shower separate as both can be occupied at once. Forward is the master stateroom, with plenty of headroom and featuring a large V-berth with custom mattress, hanging lockers and storage above and below.
Outside, the large cockpit has built-in seating for five and room for extra chairs and a table. There is abundant storage for cruising gear and supplies and easy access to the rudder post and spare prop. A hardtop extension was added by the original builder in 2006, and a complete canvas/plastic window enclosure provides protection during inclement weather. A small set of steps mounts on either side of the gunnel, and another on the transom, for ease of boarding.
Wide side decks with stainless steel rails make moving about safe and easy. There are two storage lockers forward for lines and fenders. A two anchor, teak platform and MUR dual-capstan windlass make anchoring safe and easy. A saltwater washdown system is located at the anchor platform. A 9.5 foot RIB dinghy and Tohatsu 6 hp 4-stroke outboard give you flexibility when anchoring, and a SeaWise dinghy launching system was professionally installed on the transom and teak swim platform. Launching and retrieving the dinghy and outboard motor is a simple, one-person job.
Electrical
Set up to be self-sufficient and trouble-free, SAWDUST features a 500+ AH house battery bank, a 270-amp alternator and a 20-amp solar charging system. Her 2500-watt inverter system, 12-volt Frigoboat refrigerator/freezer and smart charging system allow her to anchor out for extended periods. All of the controls are close to the helm.
500+ Amp Hours house battery bank
270 amp alternator
20 Amp solar charging system
2500 Watt inverter
Mechanical
SAWDUST is powered by a CAT 3208TA 435 hp diesel which was rebuilt to new specs after 1630 hours. The AquaDrive antivibration system and soft engine mounts ensure an extremely quiet, smooth running vessel. She cruises between 16 and 18 knots, achieving one nautical mile per gallon of fuel for a safe range of 250 nm at high cruise. At a relaxing 8.75 knots, she burns less than 4 gph for a range of over 500 m.
The shaft is totally enclosed by the full-length keel, and the prop is protected by a stainless steel shoe attached to the bottom of the keel. The shaft has been fitted with line cutters. A spare prop is included and stowed in the aft lazarette. Steering is hydraulic, and the wheel is a destroyer type finished with a suede leather material.
She gets on plane quickly, and provides a steady and dry ride.
Helm
The helm station, adjacent to the galley, features a double helm seat and is equipped with an Raymarine Hybrid Touch multidisplay GPS/chartplotter, SIMRAD autopilot and wind instruments, Icom VHF and 8" Perko remote control spotlight. A new bow thruster (updated 2025) makes maneuvering with the single screw easy. The helm controls, along with instruments/displays, trim tabs, bow thruster and windlass controls are neatly laid out for the helmsman. Just adjacent to the helm are the covered and organized 12v and 110v electrical panels.
Construction
SAWDUST was designed by Mike Kaufman of Annapolis, Maryland and built by the highly regarded Mast & Mallet Boatworks in Edgewater, Maryland using the cold molded technique.Construction details She is planked with two layers of Western Red Cedar encapsulated in epoxy, and the exterior is sheathed in two layers of 10 oz. fiberglass fabric. The result is a lightweight, extremely strong hull that requires no more maintenance than a fiberglass vessel. The hull''s topside is painted with AWLGRIP''s San Mateo Wheat, and the decks and house are AWLGRIP Cream. Read on below for more description from the builder.
From Mast & Mallet website:
The Thomas Point Series
The Thomas Point power boat series was designed to be good-looking, soft riding, comfortable, quick and seaworthy.
These boats are perfect for day trips, overnighting and extended cruising.
Mast and Mallet Boatworks builds on essentially a custom basis. Designed by Kaufman Design Inc. for Mast and Mallet Boatworks, based on a proven series of hull forms inspired by the New England lobster boat and the Chesapeake Bay Deadrise with some Carolina influence, the hull''s deep vee forward provides a soft entry in rough water. The flare deflects spray. The hard chine resists rolling, while the shallow vee aft increases planing efficiency.
The flare of the Thomas Point hull takes its inspiration from the Chesapeake Bay boats. From the New England lobster boats comes the strong rise of sheer to keep her dry in a seaway. A subtle tumble-home aft complements the flare and sheer forward to produce the unique shape that is the signature of the "Thomas Point" series.
The bottom shape was developed as a comfortable and safe sea-keeping configuration as well as an efficient planing form.
The deadrise (or the amount of "vee") forward exceeds what is normally found on high-speed offshore racers. Since it is the forward part of the boat that must take the slamming in rough water, having a high deadrise, or deep vee, forward makes for a soft ride in a seaway.
The deadrise decreases aft to approximately 9 degrees at the transom. This increases stability and planing efficiency. This configuration also has the advantage of being easier to handle at low speeds than a constant deadrise "prismatic" hull. The hard chine is most efficient for a planing hull and resists rolling better than a round bilge shape.
The result is a hull shape that has a soft ride at all speeds, and that handles easily and tracks well in all speed ranges. This shape has been proven in the classic hull shapes from which the Thomas Point draws, as well as the many boats of the "Thomas Point" class built by Mast and Mallet
Construction
Mast and Mallet builds the Thomas Point series in Edgewater, Maryland. The hull construction is an epoxy-wood composite system using double planked Western Red Cedar laid longitudinally over transverse fir frames. Four substantial longitudinal stringers are laid down over the frames and are joined to the hull skin with blocks between the frames. Each piece of wood in the hull, deck and superstructure is coated with WEST™ System epoxy to completely seal it from moisture penetration. Each piece is glued along all faying (joining) surfaces with epoxy reinforced with high strength filler.
The exterior of the hull is saturated with epoxy and sheathed with two layers of 10 oz. fiberglass cloth for extra strength and resistance to abrasion. All interior surfaces are coated with an epoxy barrier coating for an especially clean, finished appearance.
The resulting structure is a one-piece unit with the wood fibers running in the direction of the anticipated loads for maximum strength. The strength meets or exceeds that of high-speed boats of other materials, while the weight is 2000-3000 pounds less than that of an equivalent fiberglass boat. The combination of the longitudinal double planking and the longitudinal stringers that tie into the engine mounts and support the tanks, results in a structure with exceptional longitudinal strength and stiffness, while eliminating the maintenance problems associated with traditional wood construction. The epoxy coating seals out moisture and rot, and the Awlgrip (tm) coat requires only cleaning, no buffing or waxing.
